WHO IS AN OVERCOMER?
"...whoever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world -- even our faith. And who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God."
--1John 5:4-5
"The one who overcomes, this one will be clothed in white clothing. And I will not blot out his name out of the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels."
--Revelation 2;17

This Week in Overcomers Class... |
This Sunday, August 3, we will cover James chapter 2, discussing "The Royal Law" and "Genuine Faith". Please read James 2, and consider the following questions: |
What is the situation James is denouncing and his main message as it relates to this situation? (2:113; especially 14) |
What two things does James show to be incompatible? (2:1) |
In James 1:25, the perfect law of liberty set the believer free from sin. How does it free one here? (2:12) |
Read Matthew 25:3340 and reread James 2:12 and 13. How will compassion be victorious over judgment? |

This past weekend, the 19th of July, a great man of God went home to be with the Lord. Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, was an exemplary Christian leader, author, and soul-winner! I have been subscribing to his email newsletter entitled "Insights" for some time now, and in memory of Dr. Bright, I would like to share the following "insight" from one of his past newsletters.

A BIG GOD!!
| "This is a story about a little girl who, while on the way home from church, turned to her mother and said, "Mommy, the preacher's sermon this morning confused me." |
| The mother said, "Oh! Why is that? |
| The girl replied, "Well, he said that God is bigger than we are. Is that true?" |
| "Yes, that's true," the mother replied. |
| "He also said that God lives inside of us. Is that true too?" |
| Again the mother replied, "Yes." |
| "Well," said the girl, "if God is bigger than us and He lives inside of us, wouldn't He show through?" |
| Children have an amazing way of getting down to essentials without the pretenses that often accompany adults. What the little girl said in simple innocence was, indeed, a great theological truth. |
| When we receive Christ, God does begin to live inside of us. "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16, NIV). "To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27). |
| After we receive Christ and we begin to walk in faith and obedience, His life should be seen in us. In fact, we should become more invisible and Christ more visible. About Jesus, John the Baptist exclaimed, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30). |
| How do we decrease and how can He increase in our lives? It is by putting aside our selfish desires and through the enabling of the Holy Spirit inviting Jesus Christ to really be Lord of our lives, replacing our selfishness with His unselfishness, our lack of love for others with His love for others, our irritations and hostile feelings with His peace. |
| By our moment-by-moment choices throughout the day, we choose to say "no" to our flesh, which is at war with God (Romans 8:7-8) and invite Christ through the Holy Spirit to be in control of our lives in little things as well as in big things. The apostle Paul said it this way, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). |
| God is a big God! May others see Him in us." |

| Scripture Verses for 2003
It has become a tradition, each year, for class members to choose a verse of Scripture for the year. The purpose is to make a particular Scripture verse personal for you; a "word" which the Holy Spirit can use to teach and minister to your life throughout the year! This has proven to be a valuable practice in the lives of those who have done it in previous years. If you have not chosen a Scripture for 2003 and would like to participate, please contact me in Church, or send me an email.
Below is a list of all those who have picked their verse for this year, along with the chosen Scripture. We will keep this list posted for the remainder of 2003 to remind you of your Scripture verse each time you visit. You will also find the list posted on the bulletin board in the Skylight room.
